Inconclusive answer to Kilcullen bank reopening query

A query about when or whether the Bank of Ireland branch in Kilcullen might reopen has received an inconclusive reply, writes Brian Byrne. There are concerns locally that the bank might use the pandemic 'temporary' closure to shut the branch permanently.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer wrote to the bank's regional management last week expressing her concern and those of constituents that the branch may not reopen after the Covid crisis is over. She also noted that particularly for older customers and the 5km restrictions on travel it had been a 'most inconvenient' time for the branch to be closed.

In response, Joan Treacy of Bank of Ireland Community Banking said the closures in March allowed local branch staff to help out in the remaining branches where social distancing and public health guidelines had to be maintained. She also said that some staff were allocated to the bank's call centres to help deal with the large volume of customers seeking Covid-19 supports.

Ms Treacy said that as the course of the pandemic remains unclear, and social distancing is likely to remain in place for some time, that 'we cannot be definitive regarding the next steps at this stage'. She then outlined measures taken by the bank to help cocooning, carer, and personal customers.

Cllr O'Dwyer responded, saying she fully understood the demands being placed on banks at this time.

"However, I would like some indication as to when Bank of Ireland plans to reopen in Kilcullen ... a very busy town. As we approach Phase 2 with more and more businesses returning, it is important that that we can ensure there is going to be an active bank to support what is a very busy, vibrant town."

Cllr O'Dwyer told the Diary that she 'is not happy at all' with the Bank's response and will continue to pursue the matter.
