Weatherday: More than wind in our sails

Dry today with spells of hazy sunshine. Light easterly breezes. Maximum for our area around 14deg, better in sheltered sun.

On this day in 1838, the English SS Sirius docked in New York, being the first Transatlantic steamship passenger service.

The ship was a hybrid two-master, launched the year before for the London-Cork service operated by the St George Steam Packet Company.
