On this day in 1947, Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and a crew of five set sail from Peru aboard the balsa raft Kon-Tiki and arrived in Polynesia three and a half months later. He was trying to prove that ancient people from the Americas could have colonised Polynesia.
