Biodiversity gardening guide by Calverstown author available from KCC
A reminder that the recently produced Gardening for Biodiversity by Calverstown author and wildlife expert Juanita Browne, with illustrator Barry Reynolds, is available from Kildare County Council's Heritage Officer, writes Brian Byrne.
Gardening for Biodiversity was produced for Laois County Council with assistance from local authority Heritage Officers across the country, including Kildare's Bridget Loughlin. It was also provided with support from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and The Heritage Council.
Juanita describes projects to help wildlife of all kinds, and details tasks suitable for everyone from the total beginner to the more ambitious DIY enthusiast. Step-by-step drawings are included from Barry Reynolds, and many photographers have also given permission for their wildlife photos to be used.
I recently got one for ourselves, and for our Australian family recently returned to live in Ireland. It's a quite beautiful publication. A pdf version can be downloaded free here.
Juanita Browne is a zoologist and media graduate who has worked for almost two decades on wildlife productions in print, documentary radio, and on television. Her books include Ireland's Mammals (2005); Kildare's Natural Heritage (2008), Put the Kettle On — the Irish love affair with tea (2013); and My First Book of Irish Animals (2014). She also edits Biodiversity Ireland, the magazine of the National Biodiversity Data Centre and is currently working on the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.
