Covid business closures 'may last 12 weeks' — survey

Most businesses in County Kildare that have closed due to the coronavirus expect the closure to last 12 weeks, writes Brian Byrne.

This is one sobering conclusion for the latest survey of businesses by the County Kildare Chamber, which also found that more than four in ten businesses who responded are currently closed entirely.

Some 30pc of respondents said they have closed their public-facing offices, and are now working from home. One in five businesses in the survey have laid off their entire staff, while almost half have laid off some staff.

Other analysis shows that 84pc of respondents believe their revenues will decline by at least a quarter over the next three months, while a quarter expect that decline to be by more than 90pc.

Commenting on the results, CEO of the Chamber Alan Shine said the should not be a shock to anyone, as the crisis is hitting business in all sectors. "Since the outset, we have highlighted the need for far-reaching economic intervention from Government to support local economies and job creators right across the country," he said. "We need action on a scale we have not seen before. There is almost unanimous agreement that a post-COVID-19 stimulus package will be required and ... must include the provision of grants for business to help them re-open their doors and restore jobs lost."
