'We're front line, it's what we do' — pharmacist
Joan Kilgallen, MD of the Burke Group of pharmacies in Kilcullen, Naas, and Ranelagh in Dublin, has confirmed that their premises and services will remain open for the duration of the Covid crisis, writes Brian Byrne.
"We're in the front line among the health services, so that's what we do," she told the Diary. "We may have to make further changes to how we operate, as the guidelines change, but our customers are being very compliant with what we are doing now, maintaining appropriate distances from others and the staff."
She is keen to encourage the group's delivery service for medicines to people who don't want to, or should not, leave their homes at this time. "We have two drivers lined up to make these deliveries, and will deliver between 12 noon and 6pm each day, within 24 hours of requests."
Prescriptions can be acquired by the pharmacists from GPs, by fax or email. Also, customers phoning in orders can send photos of their prescriptions if they have them, or they can be given to the driver on delivery. "Payment will be managed at the pharmacy ordering end, so the drivers can provide a hands-off delivery."
Ms Kilgallen, who has been in the pharmacy business for 30 years, believes there's a very clear understanding by the community of the symptoms of Covid-19, and that the information has been very well put out by the HSE. "We can see this by the fact that we ran out of thermometers, for instance, but we have more arriving."
Delivering medicines provides protection both for the customers using the service, and for the staff at the shops. Phone 045 480450.
