Weatherday: One for Jonas Salk

A bit of a misty start will give way to sunny spells. It will be dry, with light to moderate northwesterly winds keeping temperatures a little cooler than it might otherwise be. Maybe 11deg max.

On this day in 1953, Dr Jonas Salk announced the development of a vaccine to prevent polio, globally the most frightening public health problem of the time. He never patented it, saying the vaccine was 'owned by the people'.

When he died at the age of 80 in 1995, he was working on development of vaccines against HIV.
