Passive houses open days today, Saturday

For those interested in building low energy consumption passive houses, two viewing days today and tomorrow at Old Kilcullen should be very interesting, writes Brian Byrne.

At PassiveHousing.ie, the M3 building system using expanded polystyrene thermal walls is claimed to cut energy costs to 30pc of normal and more than halves the CO2 emissions from the house. The preformed structures are stabilised with concrete combined with glass fibre.

In addition to standard triple glazing, the PassiveHouses can be fitted with solar panels + photovoltaic systems, heat recovery systems, heat system integrators, wind turbines, small wastewater treatment plants, and systems for collecting rain water

The viewing times are from 10am at the premises on the Carlow Road, over both days.
