No Link Road any time soon

The unfinished Link Road.
There are no current plans to build the proposed Link Road in Kilcullen between the Athy and Curragh roads, writes Brian Byrne.

That was made clear at this morning's meeting of the Kildare Newbridge MD, following a query by Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy about concerns relating to traffic around Scoil Bhride.

The matter was on the MD's Progress Report on the basis of a previous question from the councillor. Cllr McLoughlin Healy had noted that money has been allocated in the Council's capital budget for the road, which has for many years been in limbo because an unauthorised part of the Cnoc na Greine development impeded its routing.

Last year, a deal was finalised between Kildare County Council and Kilcullen GAA that involved a land swap, providing the Council with space to complete the road. But residents of the adjacent estates have since raised concerns about the road and its potential impact, including on safety of children going to school. Cllr McLoughlin Healy's original query had asked if the local authority had considered this.

John Coppinger, Senior Engineer Roads & Transport, told the meeting that if Kilcullen people are worried about the Link Road, they needn't be. "It's just an ambition of the Council, it's not on any design desk," he said. "Certainly we will consider all concerns when it becomes a project that's being done. But we have lots of current projects, and that's not one of them. It is on a list, but there are lots of projects on the list, and these will be progressed on priority."

He described the road plan as a 'very long-term project' despite it having a line in the budget.
