It Says in The Bridge: February 2020
The first 2020 issue of The Bridge is now on sale and leads with some new light to be shone on artefacts found on Dun Ailinne, writes Brian Byrne. The new examination of the items found during the 1960s and 1970s is being made possible by a grant from an American philanthropic organisation.
The main colour article uses the centre four pages to look back at the activities of Kilcullen 700, and shows the breadth of the community involvement in the celebrations.
A topical feature is a General Election one, with short details of the people and policies of the 11 candidates seeking our votes for election in Kildare South. Very much a handy way of helping frame local decisions.
The Spirit in The Bridge page from Julie Felsbergs is also quite topical, on the upcoming Valentine's Day that marks mid-month. She details the origin of the legend, what the festival means today, and asks 'what does it mean to you?'. Food for thought (apart from chocolate ...).
In what has now become a popular staple of the magazine, Mary Orford muses on the traffic lights in Athgarvan, often cited in Kilcullen before they even existed! Yep, true. And that other regular and popular feature, 20 Questions, is this time aimed at Gareth Landy, who has a particularly interesting response to 'one thing you've always wanted to do?'.
News topics include the Kilcullen Community First Responders, the new U-Can Ukulele Band (could be the title of a song itself), the double birthday of Nigel Phillips, the Nature Trail benefiting from the Carols by Candlelight concert, and an upcoming Arts Centre for Kilcullen.
Animal lovers have their KWWSPCA page, KCA gets off to a green start, Out and Away is to a wood in Tinahely, and there are schools pages from Kilcullen, Halverstown and Brannoxtown. Sport is light this month, but there are features on handball and the anniversary later in the month of the death of pugilist Dan Donnelly.
As always, just €2 in the usual outlets. And next month, The Bridge starts its 50th year.
