Course on business opportunities for Barrow Blueway

A training course about starting a Waterway business on the proposed Barrow Blueway gets going on Thursday in the Clanard Court Hotel, writes Brian Byrne.

The course is being run by the Kildare Local Enterprise Office, and weekly sessions will be between 6.30pm-9pm over eight evenings.

The programme aims to enable participants to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to develop their Waterway business idea, complete their business plan and start up their business.

The 46km Blueway will upgrade the Barrow Canal towpath connecting counties Kildare and Laois. Up to €2.5m a year is expected to come into local economies along the Blueway. Around 90 jobs are anticipated during its construction, with up to 130 direct and indirect jobs over the long term in tourism, recreation and hospitality.

The themes for the programme include Tourism and the Waterways; Developing Your Idea + Introduction to Taxation for micro enterprises; Legal Formalities and Preparing a Business Plan; Market Research + Effective Marketing for Your Business; Introduction to Small Business Finance; Funding Sources; Digital Marketing for Tourism; and Developing Sales.
