#GE2020: Doctor for defence, healthcare, housing and transport
Healthcare and housing are key priority issues for Dr Cathal Berry, one of the independent candidates in the upcoming General Election in Kildare South, according to a Q&A document from his campaign.
He says he wants a health service 'of which all Irish people can be proud'. On housing, he is committed to improving the current situation. A third main aim is that the constituents of Kildare South gain a reliable and efficient transport network.
Given his army background, he is also concentrating on the needs of serving Defence Forces members, veterans and families, and on pushing for investment in that area.
"I have served as a soldier in some of the most dangerous regions in the world and proven myself to be competent and hardworking," he says. "I’m fully committed to making Kildare South the most vibrant, environmentally conscious and safest constituency in Ireland. I have the passion and drive to diligently serve the people of the constituency. If we continue to vote in the same people with the same policies over and over again then we will always have the same outcomes."
He is also a supporter of sustaining local jobs and creating new employment opportunities. But not at cost to community and environment. As an example he says the the Kilsaran application to 'begin a major expansion of open-pit mining' in Ballyshannon 'is a concern for all of us'.
