Fiona McLoughlin Healy running for Dail seat
Another hat has been thrown into the Kildare South election with the announcement just an hour ago by Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy that she is running as an Independent, writes Brian Byrne.
She said in a Facebook message that the poll-topping vote she received in May for Kildare County Council did have an impact on her decision. She said it was a clear mandate to continue to challenge the unquestioning consensus politics that has pervaded the Kildare South constituency for decades, to the detriment of a large portion of its constituents.
"I will be asking you to please consider giving me your number one to go on and represent you in the Dail," she said, "not on the basis of enthusiastic election promises, rarely delivered, but on the basis of a track record in holding local government to account for their effectiveness in building sustainable communities and how and where they spend public funds."
Cllr McLoughlin Healy said that she will focus in her campaign on transparency and accountability in government, on building sustainable communities that create local employment, on building social and affordable housing, on fair pay for our Defence Forces and other front line public sector workers, on public transport and cycle infrastructure, the introduction of well-being budgeting and increased ambition for climate targets for 2030.
"I will be advocating for more ASD classrooms for children with autism, and for supports and inclusion of neuro-diverse children and children with physical disabilities," she continued. "As a former nurse married to a GP who has worked at the coal face of the healthcare system for over 20 years, I will continue to highlight the role of primary and community care and of technology to release the pressure on our hospitals."
