A dog is not just for Christmas
Kildare County Council is making a seasonal appeal to people considering getting dog for Christmas to think about the lifelong commitment this means, writes Brian Byrne.
The Council says it is often better to wait until after Christmas to consider getting such an addition to the family, noting that every year its Dog Warden Service gets a high level of surrender requests for unwanted dogs, after Christmas.
Things to remember include choosing a dog that is right for the owner and family circumstances. Different breeds and ages of dog have different requirements in relation to exercise, space, food, grooming, veterinary attention and more.
Vaccination, worming, dog licence, and neutering are all issues to be thought about.
The Council’s Dog Warden Service can be contacted at 059 8623388 or 045 980588.
