Bosco coming to Kilcullen

Once upon a time there was a little Bosco, writes Brian Byrne. Who helped generations of parents to raise their small children in a happy place.

Well, Bosco is coming to Kilcullen Town Hall on Sunday 8 December as part of a 29-stop tour of Ireland which began last weekend in Kilkenny.

The Once Upon a Time tour has been organised by the Paula Lambert Puppet Theatre. Paula,  daughter of the late Eugene Lambert, was the voice of Bosco for many years. For three decades of TV the eternally five-year-old resident of a colourful box charmed children all over the land.

The famous Lambert Puppet Theatre and Museum in Monkstown, south Dublin, was almost destroyed by fire in 2015, prompting the closure and sale of the premises by Eugene Lambert’s son Liam.

In addition to destroying more than 300 puppets, the fire compounded difficult times since the 2008 recession.

It marked the end of a team of characters created by the family, especially the ‘Wanderly Wagon’ crew of O’Brien, Judge, Mr Crow and Sneaky Snake.

But Bosco is back, this time on the road instead of the goggllebox. The Once Upon a Time show will include Bosco’s adventures with Sleeping Beauty and the fairies.

More details close to the event, but it should be a perfectly apt Christmas time treat to put in every small child’s diary.
