10th Kildare Readers Festival launch in Woodbine on Monday
A special night on Monday sees the official opening of the 10th Kildare Readers Festival, in Woodbine Books, Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.
It's the first event in a packed programme for the 10th anniversary of the festival, which will bring the world of literature to readers all across Kildare.
"It's a really special honour for this anniversary to be launched in Kilcullen," says our local Librarian, Julie O'Donoghue. "It's a tribute to Dawn and all at Woodbine Books and the impact they have made in bookselling both in Kilcullen and the county. They have helped make Kilcullen a destination for book-lovers from all over."
The free event on Monday kicks off at 7pm, with readings and a discussion about their writing from Kildare's recently-appointed Writers in Residence, Annemarie Ní Chuirreáin and Sue Rainsford. They will also talk about their hopes for their Kildare residencies.
Events through until 20 October will be held in libraries in Naas, Newbridge, Kildare, Athy, Maynooth, Leixlip, Celbridge. Other venues include the Riverbank Arts Centre, Naas Racecourse, and Renehan Hall in Maynooth University.
A wide variety of presentations through the three weeks include book launches, awards, writing workshops, discussions on travel, mythology, music in literature, poetry and more.
A reading and interview with writer Patricia Gibney will take place in Woodbine Books on Thursday 10 October, from 6pm. This is presented by Kilcullen Library and Woodbine. On Saturday 12 October, Kilcullen author Hazel Gaynor will participate in a Book Club Brunch from 12pm in Leixlip Community Library. She will be with writer Antoinette Tyrell, and they will be conversing about the writing life with Margaret Madden.
Headliners include Orla McAlinden, John MacKenna, Douglas Kennedy, Joseph O’Connor, Niamh Boyce, Martina Devlin, Dermot Bolger, John Boyne, Emilie Pine, Anne Griffin, and Arnold Fanning.
