Local film makers create a murder
There might be a budding Quentin Tarantino, and maybe a couple of potential world class actors among them, but for last week the young participants in Rani Grennell's Film Workshop Summer Camp were just having fun, writes Brian Byrne.
That could be clearly seen at the showing of the result of their week's work on Friday at Brambly Cottage, Carnalway. Parents and friends were invited to view the short murder mystery they had written, acted and produced.
The theme for the project had been set by Rani, who also did the filming and editing under the direction of the 10-strong group's members. A mystery in the Agatha Christie genre, it was shot on locations in Kilcullen and in Killashee House Hotel.
In the famous crime writer's own style, there was an official police detective, a private investigator with a heavy foreign accent who came to 'solve the mystery nobody else can', and of course a body.
The necessary twists and turns in the story, and the distractions of the sub-plots, were all cleverly put together on the resulting video in what appeared as effortless ease by the cast. But the reality wasn't so effortless, as evidenced by the inevitable 'bloopers' which rounded out the movie's screening with considerable hilarity.
The enthusiasm of the young participants had clearly not diminished by Friday's viewing, and all who had been invited to it thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings.
Rani has been doing the film workshops for a dozen years now as part of her Kings and Clowns drama school. Thanking everyone for their efforts, she made special reference to the management and staff of Killashee House Hotel for allowing the premises to be used as a location for various scenes, including the 'murder'.
