Sporting theme at latest Memory Monday

July's Memory Monday provided the audience with many a sporting memory, writes Mary Orford.

Tug-o-war, cricket, billiards, boxing, soccer, archery, canoeing; the list goes on. The event kicked off (pardon the pun!) with listening to a section of a recorded interview with Sue Goulding. A witty and informed commentator on matters GAA, it was a pleasure to have Sue in the audience and a pleasure to listen to her memories of football, camogie and refereeing.

Articles from the Kildare Observer and Leinster Leader newspapers from 1886 and 1915 respectively shone a light on a GAA final (the Rags won!) and horse racing in Nicholastown. The races weren't limited to horses. It was all very egalitarian and donkeys and jennets were racing for the grand prize of one pound!

Where would we be without Liam Walker? He delved into the deep recesses of his memory to recall individual sportsmen and women and family dynasties from a vast array of sports (one of Liam's ancestors owned a race horse running on St Stephen's Day, 1886). The list wasn't confined to humans — we even heard names of locally owned prize winning horses and greyhounds.

Our sporting heroes were well remembered at the July Memory Monday.

Note: there will be no Memory Monday in August. Our next event will be held on Monday 9th September. 11am. Heritage Centre, Kilcullen.
