Formal surveys of Old Kilcullen burial site advised

The possibility of formal surveys of the ring barrow burial space on Old Kilcullen is to be explored following a visit to the site by members of the archaeological team investigating Dun Ailinne, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows advice from Dr Susan Johnston and Dr Susanne Garrett, who had been invited to view the barrow after Dr Johnston's recent presentation in the Town Hall about the progress on Dun Ailinne.

"They were particularly impressed with its very close resemblance to a ring ditch on Dun Ailinne, which their recent work has uncovered," says Gerry O'Donoghue. "They were very appreciative of the efforts of local residents to preserve the monument."

After a 'Ring around the Ring Barrow' event recently held on Old Kilcullen, members of the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association have carefully cleared the overgrown vegetation to further reveal the barrow.

"The results are breathtaking," says Gerry O'Donoghue. "Everybody present, including the visiting archaeologists, were very excited by the scale of the barrow and by its state of preservation. They advised that a topographical survey and a magnetometer survey should be arranged as a priority. My understanding is that the local committee will explore possible avenues to arrange these."

Meanwhile, your editor was away for the previously mentioned Dun Ailinne presentation. But I understand it was once again extraordinarily interesting, with a great deal of information exchanged in the question and answer session.

The continuing work and the results being obtained are very encouraging for the future possibilities at the site, which is still on the UNESCO assessment list for designation as a World Heritage location along with Tara, Knoc Cruachain (Co Roscommon), and Amhain Macha (Navan Fort, Armagh).
