Reelected independent councillor thanks her team

Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy revealed last night that she had almost decided not to run for Kildare County Council in the recent elections until just a month before they took place, writes Brian Byrne.

Speaking at a 'thank you' get together in Fallons for her campaign and canvassing team, she said she had come to the conclusion that she had 'done as much as she could' during the last five years and it was time for 'someone else to carry on'.

However, following discussions with her family, friends and campaign helpers, the independent councillor decided to seek a second term in the restructured Newbridge LEA. She subsequently topped the poll and was elected on the first count with a substantial surplus.

“That whopping vote was due to the people in this room,” she said last night, thanking all involved in 'Team FMH' led by Petronilla Arnott and Jenny Kavanagh, and Alan O'Neill who had done an 'absolutely brilliant' management of the canvassing.

Fiona's parents John McLoughlin and Maura Fahy McLoughlin were also present, and she thanked them for the values they had taught her — “Without them, I wouldn't be the person I am. When I was growing up, they were always the go-to people for anyone who needed help.”

For her husband Bernard and their family she had a special mention. “Doing politics the way I have done over the last five years is not the easiest, especially when it results in personal attacks. Bernard always knew when I came home whether to leave me alone to process things, or to pick me up and fix me.

“I couldn't have done the hard bits without him,” she concluded. “It's now lovely to do some of the good bits with all of you.”
