Mairead McGuinness campaigns in Kilcullen

It was a busy political morning in Kilcullen with the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness MEP, being introduced to lots of people by Kilcullen's FG local elections candidate, Tracey O'Dwyer, writes Brian Byrne.

In a walkabout accompanied by Martin Heydon TD, they visited Woodbine Books, Ger Peacocke, Berneys Chemists and Nolan's Butchers, meeting many interested people along the way.

Later she went to Kilcullen Mart, where she met with a number of the Mart's customers, as well as re-acquainting with Ger Smith, Chairman of Leinster Cooperative Marts.

The two go back a long way, to when she was one of the country's foremost agricultural journalists.

"Thirty years," Ger said. "You were writing a lot of good things about me then."

"And I wasn't getting paid much for them, either," she responded with a grin.

Before leaving for her next appointment in Athy, she addressed the local farmers from the ring.

Ms McGuinness has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland since 2004, and is running in the Midlands North West constituency, with Maria Walsh seeking a second Fine Gael seat alongside her.

The fact that Ger Peacocke's late dad Hugh had made boots for Charlie Haughey didn't put her off taking a hammer to a boot heel herself.
