Big matches ahead for KBC

We draw to the end of our group stages in the Dublin District League with some of our teams making it to the knock out stages, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club Match Secretary Enda O'Neill.

Successfully through to the Quarter Final stages are Orla Brophy's Division 8 Ladies who finished second in their section. Enda O’Neill's Division 4 Men topped their section unbeaten and await either Rathmore or Titans in their Quarter Final fixture. Jennifer Monaghan’s Division 5 Mix have also proved hard to beat topping their section also unbeaten and wait the final result between Trinity and An Caislean Nua to see who they will play in their Quarter Final.

Tara O’Neill wrapped up her Div 3 Mix League campaign with two matches played on March 19th and 21st. The team needed two wins to progress to the knock out stages. Unfortunately it's not to be their year and fell at the first hurdle, with a respectable 2-2 draw against Old Bawn at home. In their second and final match on Thursday 21st of March against Mount Pleasant, Tara and her team mates again mustered up another good performance but again could only get a 2-2 draw. Tara, Sinead Kelly, David Jackson and Mick Cass can hold their heads with the way they have played this season. To finish third in your section and just narrowly missing out on the Quarter Finals is a great achievement at this level.

Ross Cole and the Division 7 Men are in prime position in the table with two matches left to play in their group. The lads currently are third in the table.
Vincent Coller and the Grade 3 Mix Team hosted Waterford's Ladylane in the Semi Final of the South West Cup on Friday 22nd of March and what a cracker this one turned out to be. After the mens and ladies doubles the Kilcullen squad held a commanding 3-1 advantage going into the mix. Kilcullen's advantage was increased when Caroline Sheedy and John McGrane took the first mix in a tight 3-setter with only eight points difference over the three sets. Ladylane made a fight back in the second mix taking it in two sets, Tara O’Neill and Owen Wallace never getting started. Third mix turned out to be another close affair with Chelsey Cox and Vincent loosing in three sets, the deciding set lost only by a mere one point. This put the pressure on the Kilcullen side and when Bernie Smyth and John Mullen lost their mix in three sets it left the game all even with a 4-4 score line. To decide the winners of the match it would have to go to sets countback. After the tally Kilcullen were beaten by just 1 set, heartbreak for the Rags coming so close to another Grade 3 Final. Hard luck to Vincent and his team on a great cup run and for doing the club so proud.

Another team that are flying the flag high for the parish are the Grade 2 Mix team and their interim captain Murt Dunne who will represent KBC in the Grade 2 Cup Final in Carlow LTC on Tuesday 26th March. The KBC outfit are hoping to do the double after beating Baltinglass in the League Final last month. The Rags will face their Wicklow rivals Baltinglass once more in another grudge match. The club would like to wish Murt and his team the best of luck in their final.

Olivier P Valroy and his Grade 6 team will also host the Grade 6 Baltinglass team in their Cup Semi Final decider on Tuesday 26th of March. Heres hoping the Rags can pull off an upset in this one. Good luck to Olivier and the team in this crunch semi final.
Finally there was more positive news for KBC last weekend when the Mix pairing of Tara O’Neill and John McGrane made it to the All Ireland International Grade E Finals. In the qualifiers Tara and John have only dropped one set. In the Semi Finals Tara and John beat Emily Miggin and David Brodigan in two sets 21-18/21-15. From all in the club best of luck to Tara and John in their final which will be held in May.
