Kilcullen Badminton update
We start with some South West League and Cup results this week, writes Enda O'Neill, Match Secretary of Kilcullen Badminton Club. First out on Tuesday 5th February were Murt Dunne's Gr 2 Mix who hosted rivals Baltinglass in their last match in the Gr 2 League. There were plenty of tight games in this one and the match ended honours even with a 4-4 draw. This ensures that Murt and his team a Final spot in what has proved to be a successful season so far for the team.
The busiest of our teams so far this month has to be Olivier Valroy and his Gr 6 team who have contested in three South West matches to date in both the League and Knock Out Cup. Olivier's first outing was against St Laurence's on Thursday 7th of February at home. In a great match the Gr 6 Team secured a 4-4 draw. They did not have much time to recover as they then hosted Myshall in the first round of the Knockout Cup and it wasn’t going to be an easy match for the “Rags” against last year's Gr 6 Cup Champions. Oliver and his team did prevail however and Mysall crashed out of the cup with a 5-3 defeat to Olivier's well oiled machine. To round off their hectic week they travelled to St Laurences for their last league group match where they needed a win to secure a semi final spot. In another close encounter, the Kilcullen outfit held their nerves and left larries with an impressive 5-3 victory. Well done to Olivier and the team who now face Mountmellick in the League Semi Final on the 19th of February.
In the Dublin District League the Divison 4 Men had two matches scheduled in their very tight group. The lads captained by Enda (yours truly) had four points from two matches. The lads knew that two good results would put them in a strong position and keep the heat on table toppers PBAI. They firstly hosted Boyne on Thursday 7th February, the Kilcullen lads set their stall out early in this match and sent the Boyne boys back to Meath with a defeat, a great 3-1 win for Kilcullen putting them in second place one point behind PBAI and equal in matches. It was then the turn of PBAI to visit and on Tuesday 12th February PBAI took the N7 down to Kilcullen. In a very close game John McGrane and Enda lost their first mens in a very tight 3 setter, Barry O’Neill and super sub John Mullen steadied the ship taking the second Mens in another tight game. Kilcullen's third and fourth men played simultaneously and with some fine badminton from both pairs the Kilcullen quartet took both their games giving the Kilcullen side an impressive 3-1 win. This puts the KBC Men top of their group with 10 points and two matches left to play, it wont be all plain sailing though with nothing seperating the four teams. The lads visit An Caislean Nua in their next meeting on Feb 28th and then PBAI on March 02nd. Good luck to the team in their two crucial away matches.
Our Division 5 Men have also had a busy few weeks and visited Sheriff Street on Tuesday 5th of February. It was a successful trip for Vincent Coller and his team and the earned a very good 3-1 victory. They were out again on Thursday 7th February this time in an away match to Vikings and it was here they suffered their first defeat in the league losing 3-1 to a strong team. Vincent, John, Keith O’Neill and Oisin Egan have been so impressive so far that even after this hiccup they are still top of the table with Vikings second a mere point behind. Vincent and the lads play Smith Nirvana in their next match on February 19th.
Finally we need to wish our Division Ladies the best of luck on Thursday 14Th of February when they play Trinity in the Division 8 Ladies Cup Final. Good luck to captain Orla Brophy and her team, Teresa McGlynn, Maeve P Valroy and Lynda Murtagh in their Final and hopefully the Ladies will bring home some silverware.
