Grade 3 Mix finish SWL with a flourish!

Kilcullen's Grade 3 Mix team had a very busy week in the South West League between Monday and Thursday playing three matches and wrapping up their Grade 3 Mix league, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club's Match Secretary Enda O'Neill.

Jennifer Monaghan's team had drawn with Portlaoise on Monday 28th of January and hoped to go a few steps better playing Ballinabranna of Carlow in their two closing fixtures. Wednesday 30th January the team travelled to the Barrowsiders along with suber sub Vincent Coller who was drafted in for the remainder of the league. It was a good night in Carlow for the Kilcullen troop and they beat their counterparts 6-2.

Thursday 31st of January it was Ballinabranna's turn to visit Kilcullen and if they were hoping for a better result they were to be sorely disappointed. Jennifer and the team went one better (literally) beating Ballinabranna 7-1 in a one sided match. This puts Kilcullen temporarily in second spot in the league three points ahead of Baltinglass, unfortunately though Baltinglass have one match in hand so it looks like a third spot finish for “The Rags”. Well done however to Jennifer, Caroline Sheedy, Ber Smyth, Chelsey Cox McDonald, John Mullen, Barry O’Neill, Owen Wallace and super sub Vincent. It was a tough league but it was nice to finish with a flourish.

In Dublin District KBC’s Division 3 Mix travelled to Mount Pleasant on Tuesday 29th of January with Vincent Coller again providing his services as a sub. Tara O’Neill and her team were very unlucky in this match narrowly beaten 3-1 with some close games. Tara’s team are still well in the hunt and face Trinity in their next fixture. Hard luck to Tara, Sinead Kelly, Dave Jackson and Vincent.

Ross Cole and the Division 7 Men travelled all the way to Ashbourne on Tuesday 29th January in a league clash. This proved to be a tight affair with Ross and Keith O’Neill out in first mens taking the game in three sets. Kasi Vallinagagam and Gio Etorne went out in second mens and also just edged it again in three sets. Third mens, Keith and Gio lost their first set but pulled it out of the bag winning two sets in a row to take the game putting KBC 3-0 up. At this stage the Ashbourne spirit had broken and Ross and Kasi took the game in two sets winning 21-13 and 21-15 giving the KBC side a clear sweep and a 4-0 victory. Well done to the lads on a good performance.

Finally also travelling away, to Ailesbury were KBC’s Division 2 Mix side but this time without captain Lynsey Walsh due to a serious injury, the club of course wish Lynsey a very speedy recovery. Mutt Dunne has taken over the captains badge and drafted in Tara O’Neill. Again it wasn’t to be KBC’s night and they were beaten again in a very tight match 3-1. Hard luck to Murt, Sinead Kelly, Gareth Hogan and Tara on a fine effort.
