Consultation on electoral registration reforms

A public consultation is under way on proposals to modernise the electoral registration process, writes Brian Byrne.

The proposals are centred around a system that is suitable for both traditional paper forms and online registration. If implemented, they would eliminate visits to Garda Stations and queuing in public offices, as well as improving accuracy and security of the registration process.

The reforms proposed would require an improved identity verification, possibly requiring provision of Personal Public Service Numbers (PPSNs).

Limited data sharing between local authorities who manage the electoral registers, and other state bodies, are also part of the discussion.

The consultation documents are available here. All submissions must be made by Friday 15 March 2019, and can be made online in Word format to registerreform@housing.gov.ie.

Responses can also be posted to Electoral Registration Project Consultation, Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, Custom House, Dublin 1, D01 W6X0.

All written submissions received will be made publicly available on the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government's website.
