Book recalls journeys of WW1 ship's radio operator

A book to get its Kilcullen launch in Woodbine Books on 20 December provides a fascinating background to the life of a radio operator on cargo ships during WW1, writes Brian Byrne.

Over the Rolling Waters I go is an account of the experiences of Maurice MacGrath's daughter Jean MacGrath Beattie, who decided to follow his voyages by travelling on cargo ships on the modern versions of the routes his ships took.

Jean is sister of Geraldine Gahan of Kilcullen, who wrote in a recent issue of the Bridge magazine about their father and his journeys, during which his ships were torpedoed twice.

Geraldine accompanied Jean on the land parts of her journeys, to the prison camp in Germany where Maurice MacGrath was interned after being captured by a U-boat.

Over the Rolling Waters I go will be launched at 7pm on 20 December by Kilcullen's Librarian, Julie O'Donoghue.
