Badminton roundup

Even a week before Christmas our teams were busy wrapping up the last of their 2018 matches, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club Match Secretary Enda O'Neill.

Monday 17 December in the South West Mix League, Jen Monaghan and her Grade 3 Mix team visited Baltinglass in a bid to improve on their defeat to that same team the week previous. Alas it wasn’t to be for the Kilcullen outfit who appeared to suffer from a bout of travel sickness and lost 6-2 to a strong Baltinglass side. It's not all over for the Kilcullen team who still have four matches still to play, but it will be an uphill battle for Jen and her team. Their next and vital match is a home fixture to Portlaoise and if they can get a win they will certainly be back in the hunt to make the playoff stages.

Thursday 20 December KBC played two Dublin District matches. Vincent Coller and his Division 5 Men were hoping to book a Dublin District Cup Semi Final spot when they visited St Brigid's Men in an away fixture in Rathdown School, Glenagrary. Sadly it wasn’t to be the lads night and they crashed out of the cup losing 3-1 to a strong St Brigid's side. Our fine fellows however are cruising in the League and top their section going into the New Year.

Also playing on Thursday 20 December, this time at home in the complex, were Tara O’Neills Division 3 Mix team. Tara and her team mates were hosting (yes you’ve guessed it!) our Wicklow rivals, Baltinglass! I had the pleasure of watching this one and it turned out to be an incredible game of badminton, with. in my opinion. the Ladies game being the game of the night. Our Ragettes, Tara and Sinead Kelly were unfortunate to lose it in three sets. The match however ended honours even at 2-2, a fair result for the two teams that played so well. This result keeps the KBC Mix side also top of their section going into the new year.

Friday 21 December was the night to let the hair down with our Christmas night out in “Les Olives” and this was also a night to thank two club members for their contributions to Kilcullen Badmintion Club. Both awards were in the form of mounted  KBC jerseys, which were framed by local Niamh O’Connor daughter of Joe of Castle Fish, Kilcullen.

Rahm Hooda was presented the 2014/2015 KBC Jersey for his kind sponsorship. Rahm is the owner of Centra in Suncroft and joined our club last year. He currently plays on the Division 8 Mix team. From the club and committee we would like to thank you for this kind gift which will go towards the costs of shuttles, hall rental and other overheads.

Our second presentation was given to John Mullen and was the 2017/2018 jersey. John joined KBC in 2005 and has been with us ever since. I've had the pleasure of playing on teams and on the court with John over the last ten years and he is a dedicated team and club member. For the last two seasons John has secured sponsorship from DSV, the company he works for. John is the man that does so much work behind the scenes, he is always the first to volunteer to help in any situation whether it be laying the mats for the annual Shuttlefest, helping run the summer club, welcoming visiting teams, putting up and taking down nets, all the little things that are never commented on or seen, but without which the club wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does. The committee and club would like to thank John for all his hard work and dedication to KBC over the years.

Finally I would like to wish all the Kilcullen Diary readers a very Happy New Year.
