Warning to be vigilant against burglars

Castlemartin Lodge Residents Association has warned its members to be vigilant about suspicious activity anywhere in the region of the estate, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows the finding of chalked symbols outside one resident's home.

According to charts circulating on social media, some issued by a number of police forces in these islands, these are widely believed to be used as signals to indicate whether a house is worth robbing, and whether doing so will be easy or difficult. However, another explanation may be that they are marks made by utility companies indicating work to be done.

The origin of chalk-marking a wall at a house is believed to come from tramps who used them to indicate where a meal might be obtained.

Regardless of chalk marks or not, with these darker evenings, An Garda has reminded people to take common-sense precautions against burglars.
