Remembering Kilcullen's WW1 dead on Armstice Day
Today we will think of the 34 men from the Kilcullen area who died in the fighting of WW1, which officially ended this morning one hundred years ago, writes Brian Byrne.
At this link you download and hear a roll call of those men, whose names were read out at an event in Kilcullen Community Library in July 2014.
That event was part of a project of research and remembrance by the Kilcullen Great War Commemoration Group.
The project included the planting of a tree in the grounds of Kilcullen Community Library to remember the Kilcullen fallen. Earth from one of the areas where Kilcullen men died was placed in the infill around the tree, and the event was attended by relatives of some of those killed.
A banner (top picture) designed by local artist Kieran Behan was also displayed in the market square, which incorporates the face of Joseph Keating, a great-uncle of the Commemoration Group's leader, Julie O'Donoghue.
The main event of the year was a concert, 'Our Unfortunate Sons'.
The war officially ended at 11am on 11 November 2018. The County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee is unveiling a plaque in Aras Chill Dara this morning, to mark the deaths of two women and 748 men from the county who died in the conflict.
