Permission granted for shop, apartments proposal

Kildare County Council has granted permission for a shop and two 2-bedroom apartments in the building behind The Hideout on the New Abbey Road, writes Brian Byrne.

The application by Knockout Taverns was made last April, and the proposed work involves a change of use of part of an existing ground floor store and of an existing attic store area.

During the planning assessment, requests for further information were made regarding the type of retail business to be carried on in the proposed shop. The applicant said it would not be used for bookmaking or banking.

There was also a query about health safety in the construction phase around the current asbestos roof on the building. The applicant has undertaken that such material will be removed under all safety regulations and procedures.

The application envisaged, subject to granting of permission, building work commencing in spring 2019, to last about six months. The application was managed on behalf of Knockout Taverns Ltd by Murphy Design & Build Solutions.

Historical Note: There are people still living in Kilcullen who will remember the upper floor of this building being used as a training centre by Kilcullen Boxing Club, during the 1950s.

Note: This story has been updated to reflect the granting of planning permission.
