More memories treasure last night

Despite an inclement night, we had another great response to our request for memorabilia, writes Mary Orford on behalf of the Meitheal of Memories Project Team, following last evening's session in the Heritage Centre.

Among other things, people brought along photos, receipts from the Hibernian Bank, tickets for seats R1 and R2 for the 1976 Capers show, an employment contract for 1954 covering a car allowance (a car but the petrol and oil was at the employee's own expense!), and a hymn sheet for a folk mass from 1977. There is no end to the material that people keep — and no end to the memories that surround all those treasures.

One item that turned up is testament to the teaching skills of Gerry O'Donoghue. His former pupil talked in glowing terms of Gerry's love of history which he instilled in the pupils. It is a template picture drawn by Gerry and coloured with crayons by one of the pupils. The image is a map of where they were to go on their school tour so that, by the time the pupils travelled the roads, they knew the place names, the items of historic interest and the geography and landscape of their journey. To Vinegar Hill and back (with time for shopping!) in 1977.

The second is a photograph from the 1950s (top). We have some names but not all — so it's one for the photograph detectives who read the Kilcullen Diary.

We thank all those who supplied items. We forgot about the rain outside and basked in the warmth of shared memories!
