'James Caird' artist visits Woodbine

The local Ballitore connection with explorer Ernest Shackleton was recalled last week with the visit of graphic artist David Butler to Woodbine Books, writes Brian Byrne.

He was promoting The Voyage of the James Caird, a graphic novel which he has published in association with writer Gavin McComiskey.

Davis is pictured with Saoirse Behan in the bookshop, which is hoping to organise an event with him for Irish Book Week which runs from 27 October.

The story records the amazing voyage in the lifeboat James Caird from Elephant Island in the South Shetland Islands to South Georgia, a distance of 1,300km.

The journey was made by Shackleton and some of the crew of his ship Endurance, which had been lost in the ice of Antarctica, to get help for the rescue of the rest of the crew.
