Maintain Hope concert only a week away
Gerry O'Donoghue reminds us that there are just 'seven sleeps' until the New Year Gala Concert in aid of Maintain Hope on Wednesday next, writes Brian Byrne.
For those who might be still feeling a little low after so-called 'Blue Monday', the evening is bound to be a tonic, so it you haven't already got your ticket from the usual sources, get down there now.
As always, John Martin is 'generaling' the gig, and has mustered a right entertaining squad to keep the evening going at full tilt.
The overall theme of the evening is Stephen Foster, the mid-19th century penman of more than 200 songs which were the parlour music of his time based in a view of the old American south and later became minstrel evergreens.
There will be Kilcullen's own 'Camptown Races' singers, comprising many familiar local musicians and songsters. Separate from them, but likely to join in anyhow, the ubiquitous and inimitable talents of Roy Thompson will entertain, as will regulars Leah O'Sullivan and Eve McMahon, Sean Leahy and friends, Noel O'Grady, and the 'Venerable Virtuosi' of Dick Dunphy and Bernard Berney.
