Christmas Fair will begin 'festive cheer'
An atmosphere of festive cheer never before seen in Kilcullen is promised for the first Christmas Fair that will take place next Saturday, 9 December, writes Brian Byrne.
More than 20 stalls representing mainly local businesses will be in the market square for the event, which will also include music, facepainting, children's stories and the official switch on of Kilcullen's Christmas lights.
Food offerings will include tasty treats from Armelle's, Kartina O'Connell's biscuits and cakes, Sarah Baar's fresh breads, Manna Organic Shop, Fallons, Nolans, Jane Russell and the River Cafe.
Clothing, crafts and gifts will be courtesy of Secret Kloset, O'Toole Gifts, Joe and Niamh O'Connor, Shabby Chic, Denise Vintage, Cynthia's Gifts, Brophy's Reindeer Logs, Rose & Ashling Crafts, and Orla Crafts.
Catherine Mulrennan Flowers, Markus Landscape Designs, and Conor Williams Photography will also be offering Christmas-themed deals, and Woodbine Books will have a variety of reading material on offer as gifts or just to pass the long Christmas season with a good book. Aidan and Dawn and Saoirse have also chosen a number of children's books to be read during the Heritage Centre story-telling.
The Fair will be in operation from 11am, and the Camphill Bell Ringers will perform at midday. DJ Georgia will keep the musical background going until 4pm when the Kilcullen Gospel Choir will entertain. The lights will be switched on at 5pm.
At 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm there will be a Letter to Santa workshop, hosted by Mary Christmas. Children, who must be accompanied by an adult, will be able to write a letter to Santa Claus, listen to a seasonal Christmas story and hear about all the Christmas books available in our local bookshop, Woodbine Books. There will be a special Santa postbag for the letters and all materials will be provided.
The whole event has been put in place by the small but dynamic committee of Katrina O'Connell, Antoinette Buckley and Lorna Brophy.
"The committee is small but the support from businesses, KCA, clubs and volunteers is amazing," says Antoinette Buckley. "We are so lucky to live in such a fantastic town, where the community spirit is just outstanding. We're looking forward to a really busy day."
As we said at the start, a 'never before' event.
