A busy fortnight for Kilcullen Badminton Club
It has been a busy fortnight for KBC with a total of 14 matches played by 10 different teams (we don’t envy you Murt Dunne!), writes Tara O'Neill.
First up after some match cancellations due to storm Ophelia, were Oisín Egan and his Grade 3 Men’s team who travelled to Carlow YM to get the first of their Southwest fixtures underway. Oisín and his men had some tight games with the final two going to three sets but were unlucky to be beaten 3-1 in the end. Rivalling them in their very own club, and also playing that night were Vincent Coller and KBC’s other Grade 3 Men’s team, who bagged themselves a 4-0 win against Ballinabranna at home. Ending the week on a high with two wins were Barry O’Neill’s Division 6 Mixed team and Karen Malone’s Grade 3 Ladies team who both had convincing 4-0 wins in the Dublin League and Southwest League.
Ross Cole and his Division 8 Mixed team got off to a good start the following week with a 3-1 win to Roundwood away. Lynsey Walsh and her Grade 1 Ladies played their away fixture to Portarlington but were unfortunate not to win with a 4-0 loss that didn’t reflect the closeness of some of the games. Barry’s Division 6 Mixed continued their winning streak beating ESB away and once again ending KBC’s week on a high.
Thursday the 2nd of November proved a busy night for KBC with a total of 5 matches being played both home and away, three of which were the start of the clubs Dublin Mixed Cup matches. Oisin and his Grade 3 Men’s were the only team to play at home on the night and managed to turn their streak around with a 3-1 win against Johnswell. Olivier Valory and his Division 9 Mixed team had a great 3-1 win against Ashbourne and will continue to the next round of the Cup. Ben Phelan and his Division 8 Mixed team also secured a 3-1 win against St Brigid’s and will progress to the next round as well. Sinead Kelly and her Division 3 Mixed team didn’t quite get the result they were hoping for against Kadca and bid farewell to the cup for this year. Securing themselves yet another win and bagging themselves a place in the Southwest Ladies final are Karen and her Grade 3 Ladies who beat Ballinabranna away. Best of luck in the final girls!
The last of the games this week were played by Kat Logan’s Division 3 Ladies and Enda O’Neill and his Division 5 Men’s team. Kat and her ladies had a tough fight ahead of them in what was their first time in this tough division. The girls played Kadca away and unfortunately came away with a loss. It was plain sailing for Enda and his team who got their Dublin League off to a good start with a win against PSLC.
A final congratulations also must go out to John Mullen and his partner Fiona Carty (Boyne) who came runners-up in the Division 4 Mixed in Leinster Badminton’s Octoberfest competition.
