The British Royal household has a person called a swan marker, a position going back to the 12th century when the British monarch had a right to claim any swans found swimming in open waters, unmarked. An annual census of the swans, known as swan upping, is led by the swan marker on a stretch of the River Thames. It takes five days, using a fleet of traditional rowing skiffs. Swans were once considered a delicacy by the Royals, but today the census is all about conservation and education.

A five-week yoga class is starting on Thursday 2 November in Kilcullen Parish Centre.

Sessions will begin at 8pm and the cost for the course is €50.
