Two out of three for KBC
A fantastic weekend with the Kilcullen Ladies flying the flag for Kilcullen Badminton Club in the Dublin District Cup Finals played in Baldoyle on Friday 03 February, writes Club PRO Enda O'Neill. Kilcullen BC had three ladies teams contesting the finals in Division 2, 4 and 8
First out was Meave Valroy and her Division 8 Ladies who played a very competent Raheny team. The Raheny side got off to a flying start winning the first ladies, things didn’t improve in the second game with Raheny again winning this one. So Kilcullen had it all to do in the third game needing to win it in two to be in with a chance of winning the cup. Alas in a tight third game the KBC ladies were again beaten giving the Cup to Raheny. Well done to Meave, Grace Elliot, Orla Brophy and Emer Flynn on getting to their first cup final, it’s a great achievement to get so far in a really competitive Ladies League.
Tara O’Neill and her Division 4 Ladies were next out and their opponents for this final were Rathmore, another Kildare based club. After a tough semi final againist St Brigids with the KBC ladies winning the match by only seven points. In this intense Final the KBC Ladies again left it to points countback, being level on games and sets. Tara and her team had a few more points to spare beating the Rathmore four by only seventeen points in this very entertaining final. Well done to our Division 4 Ladies Champions Tara, Karen O’Neill, Bernie Smith and Siobhan Willis.
Our Division 2 Ladies representatives captained by Sinead Kelly had league rivals Mount Pleasant. Our ladies have already beaten the Mount Pleasant team twice this season in the league so far and the Pleasant wanted to make it third time lucky by beating our girls in the final. The Ragettes weren’t going to let that happen and proved too strong beating the Pleasant 3-1 in a fantastic display of badminton from both sides. Well done to our Division 2 Champions Sinead, Debbie Mangan, Gillian K Smith and Lynsey Walsh on a great cup run. Well done to the three teams on doing so well this year in the cup competition.
In other matches this week Jennifier and the Grade 4 Mix team travelled to Carlow YM in their South West League and managed to come away with a 5-3 victory keeping them top of the table, Jen's next outing in the SWL is against Bough at home on Tuesday 14 February. So far this makes it three wins out of four for her side, well done to all on a great performance.
In the Dublin District League Olivier P Valroy and his Division 9 Mix team were looking to bounce back after their disappointment of loosing the Division 9 Mix Cup semi finals. Oliver and the team got back to winning ways taking their frustration out on Danum trashing them 4-0. Well done to Olivier, Meave Valroy, Teresa McGlynn and Sean “Slippers” McGrath on a great match and a comprehensive win.
Also out in the Dublin District League on Friday 03 February was Enda O’Neill and the Division 6 Mix team. Enda and his team had also been bumped out of the cup the previous week loosing 3-2 in their semi final. In a competitive match the Division 6 Mix got a draw against rivals Vikings of Dublin. This win keeps the Kilcullen quartet top of the table with Vikings close behind them. Well done to Enda, Kathrin Logan, Jennifer Monaghan and Barry O’Neill.
Finally the three Ladies team would like to thank the supporters who travelled up to cheer them on in their finals, Ladies thanks from the Men in the Club for keeping the flag flying and we promise next year we too will make it to a cup final or two!
