Tough matches for KBC!
Another busy week in the Southwest League with Kilcullen Badminton Club in full swing this week, writes Enda O’Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club.
Jen Monaghan’s Grade 4 Ladies were in action at home in their first league outing and were up against Wicklow’s Annacurra. The match took place on Thursday 13 October. Jen had to draft in sub Mari Gallagher for this match as team regular Pam Kelly was out of the country. The ladies unfortunately didn’t get the start they would have liked are were beaten in a close match 4-2. Hard luck to Jen, Kathrin Logan, Sarah Walshe and sub Mari Gallagher.
Friday 14 October saw the club host three home fixtures. We start with Clive Coles Grade 7 warriors hosting Portlaoise in a fantastic match that just saw Clive and his team pipped at the post. Going into the final game the KBC lads were 3-2 down and knew if they could win the game it would give KBC a well earned draw. In a close three setter, Portlaoise just edged them out. Hard luck to Clive and his team mates Martin Lambe, Conor Bardon and Stephen Dalton. Lads it was a fantastic match and over all great performance from the team.
Bernie Smith hosted Johnswell in their Grade 2/3 Ladies league. The odds seemed stacked against Bernie and her girls as two off the starting team were misssing due to injuries. In stepped Sinead Kelly and at very short notice Kathrin Logan. Bernie and the ladies still managed to secure a 3-3 draw with Johnswell, the League favourites. Well done to Bernie, Tara O’Neill and the two super subs Sinead Kelly and Kathrin Logan on a great result. The draw still ensures Bernie and the team are still in the mix for the semi finals.
Finally Mari Gallagher’s Grade 5 ladies hosted the Portlaoise ladies. Mari was hoping that they could build on their victory against the same side when they beat them 5-1 on their home patch the previous week. A determined Portlaoise team came out with all guns blazing. The Port ladies just shaded this one but last week’s result keeps the Kilcullen outfit top of the league. Well done to Mari, Grace Elliot, Orla Brophy and Emer Flynn.
Finally good luck to all the teams who are in action next week in the leagues. Don’t forget you can check Kilcullen Badminton Club on the web or on our Facebook page Kilcullen Badminton Club for all our news and upcoming fixtures.
