'Electric' night at KBC

Friday 30 September proved to be a busy night for the club with all four courts in play on a night where the atmosphere was electric, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club PRO Enda O’Neill.

On Court 1 stand-in captain Chelsey Cox had to draft in sub, Siobhan Willis to play instead of absent captain Bernie Smith who was celebrating her sons wedding. The Kilcullen ladies were hosting group favourites Baltinglass of Wicklow. In a truly enteraining match the Kilcullen ladies managed to take a well deserved 3-3 draw, Chelsey and the ladies could have easily nicked the match if the badminton Gods had been smiling on them! Well done to Chelsey, Tara O’Neill, Barbara Coffee and sub Siobhan Willis on a great performance on a solid first match.

Court 2 saw Eoin Bourke and his Grade 2 Men host Kildare CWMS. Eoin and his team are no strangers to success and won the Division 2 Dublin District League last season, the clubs highest accolade in the Dubin Leagues. The lads took up where they left off last season and beat their Kildare counterparts 4-2 in a great match where Eoin and his team mates showed great experience and composure during the match. Well done to Eoin and his team Martin “Murt” Dunne, Dave Jackson and Gareth Hogan.

Gillian K Smith and her Grade1 Ladies played on Court 3 against an extremely strong Portarlington side and were on the wrong side of a 5-1 scoreline. The ladies lost a couple of three setters that might have turned the match in Kilcullens favour. This result doesn’t reflect the effort that the ladies put in. Hard luck to Gillian, Sinead Kelly, Lynsey Walsh and Karen O’Neill. Karen came back to us this year and its great to have her back in the club.

On Court 4 Vincent and his band of merry men hosted Kildare CWMS in the Grade 3 Mens League . Vincent called in sub Oisin Egan for their opening match and Oisin turned out to be the star of the show with some great shots and even better defensive play. In this brilliant match Kilcullen came out the victors 5-1 in this one sided affair. Well done Vincent, Enda O’Neill, John Mullen and super sub Oisin Egan.

Finally good luck to all the KBC teams who play in the league this week.
