More silverware for KBC
We start this week with the South West League, our Ladies 3 Grade 6 captained by Meave played their last league game on 2 December, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club.
Meave and the ladies had made the finals due to their great league form only losing two of their league matches. Another successful outing for the ladies and they beat Ballinabranna 4-0. Tuesday 10 December, Meave and her team met Baltinglass in the Grade 6 Final in Athy and what a great night it turned out to be for Kilcullen. Captain Meave along with Mari, Denise and Nora brought the title back to Kilcullen with a 3-0 win over their rivals. This is KBC’s second title this season in the SWL. Well done and massive congrats to the girls.
The Mix SWL campaign got underway for KBC and first out were Sarah’s Mix 3 Grade 4 team. Their first fixture was an away match to St Laurences and in a close match KBC came out the victors beating Larries on their home patch 5-3. Well done to Sarah, and her team on a great start to their season.
To the Dublin and District League. John and his Division 5 Mens 2 team needed to put this years DD Cup defeat behind them where they were beaten by one set. Mens 2 hosted last year's semi finalists PBAI who in the same league fixture last year pummelled the KBC men 4-0. This year there was to be a different script and shell shocked PBAI were beaten 3-1 in a enthralling match. Well played to captain John and the team of Vincent, Enda and Sean on a good start to their league season.
Out on Wednesday 3 December was Caroline and the Mix 3 Division 3 team who visited An Caislean Nua. The home side however didn’t have it their own way and Caroline, Annette, Niall and sub Darren came away with a fantastic 2-2 draw. Well done to the Mix 3 team.
Thursday 4 December Murt's Mens 1 Division 2 team hosted Pembroke in Round 1 of the DD Cup. In a great match KBC prevailed and sent Pembroke crashing out of the cup with a 3-1 victory. Well done to the guys on a great win.
Finally, as you know, Kilcullen Badminton Club was shorlisted for Ireland's Badminton Club of the Year. After being shortlisted to the top four, we were pipped at the post by the deserved winners Galway Lawn Club. A big thank you has to go out to everyone in the community who supported us and took the time out to vote for us.
Thanks also to Mark Phelan who did all the ground work earlier this year, also Paddy Burke and Helen Rouse, our current Chairperson. The club would also like to especially thank Sarah Walshe our Club Secretary who really worked her socks off getting all the forms, slide shows and other little, but such important jobs done to help secure our top four spot.
