WW1 commemoration tree planting today

An Ecumenical Service and Tree Planting will take place this afternoon to commemorate those from the Kilcullen area who fought and died in World War 1, writes Brian Byrne.

The event is at 2pm in the grounds of Kilcullen Community Library, and all in Kilcullen with an interest in this particular aspect of our heritage are welcome to attend.

As part of the ceremony, some earth from one of the areas where Kilcullen men died will be placed in the infill around the commemorative tree. The planting will be carried out by Michael Walker and Frank Mitchell, both of whom had relatives who served in the War.

This is the final event for the year by the Kilcullen Great War Commemoration Group, and refreshments will be served afterwards in the Library. The Group received a Community Award from Kilcullen Community Action for its work in this centenary year of the beginning of the conflict.

Other events during the year included a talk on life in the trenches and a visit to the training trenches on The Curragh, a night of memories involving families who had someone who served in the war, and a concert and drama evening on the theme of World War 1.

A special banner was designed by Kieran Behan and placed in the Square. It incorporates the face of Joseph Keating, a great-uncle of the Group's leader, Julie O'Donoghue.

The activities of the Group through the year have been partly supported by a Heritage Grant from Kildare County Council.
