Need for town involvement in Text Alert

Despite the significant number of burglaries in the area, sign-up to the Kilcullen Community Text Alert Scheme is still slow enough in the estates and town centre area, writes Brian Byrne.

The Scheme has shown its worth in the rural areas outside Kilcullen where it was set up, with plenty of suspicious activity noted and reported through the system, which is run in conjunction with the local Garda district.

The AGM of the founding group, which recently received a KCA Community Award for their initiative, will be held early in the new year. More details when they come available.

"We have to work on signage soon," says Sabina Reddy, one of the committee members of the Scheme. "We need to do some fundraising for that."

The Diary is kept in the loop on the system and whenever we pass on warnings, there's a very strong response. But the message needs to be pushed — burglars don't confine their activities to rural areas.
