McDonagh comedy from Moat Club
The autumn presentation of Martin McDonagh’s uproariously funny 'The Lonesome West', as brought to life by the Moat Club Naas, will hit the stage on 14 October for a 5-night run, and again on 22 October for a 3-night run, writes Pat Keaveny, Moat Club PRO.
The Moat Club’s Padraig Broe is back on the boards after a successful run in the 'Steward of Christendom' for which he won Best Actor in the RTE-All Ireland Amateur Drama Festival in Athlone this year. Padraig is joined on stage by a former All-Ireland Best Actor Conor O’Connell. Conor has acted with Silken Thomas Players in Kildare Town for the last 14 years and this is his first full length play as a member of the Moat Club.
Conor and Padraig play Brothers Valene and Coleman Connors, who share the same house in Leenane and that is about the only thing they have in common. A lifetime of petty squabbles has made them bitter, spiteful and nasty to each other and to all unfortunates who come in contact with them. It is left to the hapless Father Walsh (played by John Flannery), to try and get the brothers to see sense and end their lifelong hostilities.
Claudia Delaney plays the lone female in the production — Girleen Kelleher, the local moonshine dealer. She's smart-mouthed and, like everyone in Leenane, she has a secret. The play’s director, Eugene Delaney, thinks this is McDonagh’s funniest play.
The Lonesome West is one of Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy, which includes 'A Skull in Connemara' and 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'. Latterly, London-born McDonagh has turned to film, writing and directing Academy Award nominated 'In Bruges' (2008) and 'Seven Psychopaths' (2012).
