Heritage: Byrnes grocery and bar
Here's another one for the memories, writes Brian Byrne, showing my great-aunt Peg (Margaret) Byrne at the door of the shop established by her father James Byrne.
There was a grocery in the front, a bar in beyond it, and a snug at the back before you went out to the yard. The window on the left looked into the residence area where my great aunts Peg and Nora lived during my own memory.
It's apparently taken in the late 30s, early 40s. Peg was postmistress in Kilcullen for many years, across the road in what's part of Nolans now. There's Miss Kenny's shop down from Byrnes, and I wonder who the little girl in the picture is?
I remember the shop going on fire, I was in my teens, that could have been 1961? I got small burns from lead dripping off the roof as we ran in and out trying to save stuff. Anyone else remember more accurately?
NOTE: This story has been changed in the light of new information. I thought that was my Aunt Mor (Maureen) Byrne in the picture, but cousin David Byrne had a similar one with the info on the back.
