Święconka celebrated in Kilcullen

The traditional Polish Holy Saturday 'Blessing of the Baskets' was celebrated this afternoon in Kilcullen Parish Church by Fr Niall Mackey on behalf of parishioners from Poland, writes Brian Byrne.

Known in their native language as Święconka, the blessing dates back to the early history of Poland, and is particularly beloved of expatriates and descendants of Polish immigrants in many countries.

A typical Święconka basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood. The foods chosen all have a special meaning. Eggs symbolise life and Christ's resurrection; bread and lamb are symbolic of Jesus; salt represents purification; horseradish is symbolic of the bitter sacrifice of Christ; and ham represents great joy and abundance.

The food blessed in the church remains untouched until either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, depending on local traditions.
