Badminton update
There are four club matches to report on this week for KBC, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club.
The first match we cover this week was Men 1, who played their first of two matches against Dublin's Mount Pleasant in their Division 3 DDL Match. Tuesday 25 February saw our men beat Mount Pleasant at home 4-0 in a comprehensive victory.
On Monday 3 March, Paddy’s Mens 1 team went away in the return fixture and again beat Mount Pleasant 4-0. These two wins put Paddy and his team top of the Division 3 table, so well done to Paddy, Gareth, Darren and Alastor.
Thursday 28 February saw Keith Pearson's Men 4 take on neighbours St Laurence's in their DDL clash. This turned out to be an enteraining match with Keith, and sub Dave, taking their first game against the visiting Laurence's team. Larries struck back in their second game with Pat and Clive losing in a close match.
Larries pushed on to win their third game against Keith and Clive, and finished the game beating the pairing of Pat and Dave in another super and hard fought match. So KBC lost 3-1 on the night. Hard luck to Keith, Pat, Clive and Dave — but thanks for giving the spectators a cracking match.
Finally, Enda and the Mixed 3 team played another tight match against an in-form St Judes away on Friday 28 Feb. Even though KBC lost the match 7-1, it again didn’t reflect how close some of the games were with Tara and Sarah beaten in their ladies match 2-1 with the final set going to a tie break, John and Enda beaten in their game in a tie break and three of our mixed games going to three sets. Again a little bit more experience could have turned the match and taken it KBC’s way.
All is not lost, however. Looking at the table, KBC Mix 3 can still make a Quarter Final if some of the results go our way. And if Enda and the team can pull off a victory in their last match, it’s a bit like the Republic of Ireland back in '87 (for those of you who are old enough to remember) when they needed Scotland to beat Hungary in their final match to qualify for Euro 88.
Clutching at straws, but it is possible. Remember, you can check up on all the news on our Facebook page — Kilcullen Badminton Club — or on our club website kilcullenbadmintonclub.com.
