Meeting to organise Great War commemoration

A meeting to organise a Kilcullen commemoration of its heritage in World War 1 will be held on Thursday night in Fallons, writes Brian Byrne.

It has been organised by Jim Collins and Julie O'Donoghue, and they're asking anyone with an interest or a connection to the conflict to come along and help get things going.

Julie has already booked the Town Hall for 4 August, the anniversary of the War Declaration, for an event which will 'celebrate' the centenary of the start of the war.

"I was thinking song, a bit of drama, a tribute to our local dead in some form," she told the Diary this week.

Meanwhile, Jim Collins is contacting some older people who may have family memories of participants and events pertinent to the event. "To date we know that 25 men left Kilcullen to fight in the Great War," he says. "I hope to gather further information and add more names to the list, which might make it possible to compile a booklet on the lifes of these soldiers."

The meeting begins at 8pm.
