Good report in Tidy Towns

Still room for improvementKilcullen got a good report from the Tidy Towns inspector for the 2013 competition, and received nine extra marks over last year, writes Brian Byrne. But the town remains in 15th place in the county, as competing communities also upped their game and their marks.

The extra marks bringing the total to 278 out of a possible 400 were awarded for Built Environment (2), Wildlife & Natural Amenities (3), Sustainable Waste & Resource Management (1), Residential Areas (2), and Roads, Streets & Back Areas (1).

Positive comments were made by the inspector on overall development approach, the improvement of derelict sites and buildings, and the work on maintaining the Valley Park. The Dun Ailinne Interpretive Park, the Bridge Camphill Farm and Nature Trail, and the Nicholastown Green initiative to promote wildflower growth and appreciation were also commended. The work by residents in maintaining their own areas also came in for congratulation.

Some areas of untidiness, and signage in need of refurbishment were noted, and unsightly boarding around some unused sites also came in for adverse comment, but overall Kilcullen was deemed to be 'generally tidy'.

The full report is published in the current issue of 'The Bridge'.
