Appreciation: Nicky Myers
Local people were saddened on Friday 1 March to learn of the passing of Nicky Myers, writes Jim Collins.
Nicky was born and reared in his family home on Main Street. In his youth he was one of the fittest young men in the town. He was a first-class handballer and loved to swim from the Mill Stream to the bridge.
In 1953 he left Kilcullen to pursue a professional career in the stately homes of Ireland. He then moved to London and for the next 40 years he continued his career in some of the big name homes of that city.
While living in London he welcomed and entertained many of his Kilcullen friends, often in the regal surroundings where he lived and worked. He never lost contact with Kilcullen, and when he retired he came back to live in his family home on Main Street.
He loved nature and spent his later years walking along the river. His favourite walk was through the Valley to New Abbey and then on by the river to Johnstons farm. He enjoyed the life cycle of the river and loved to talk about the swans and the wild ducks that he saw on his walks. A favourite topic was the kingfisher that nested on the island.
Nicky will be missed by all his friends in Kilcullen. May he rest in peace.
