Formal application for Kilcullen.ie

A written proposal is to be made to Kildare County Council by Kilcullen 2017, seeking permission to use the Kilcullen.ie domain name for the town's planned internet 'portal', writes Brian Byrne.

This follows a meeting with representatives of the Kildare Community Network, which manages community and commercial internet operations operated from within the Council.

The recent meeting of Kilcullen 2017 heard that local authorities all over the country took control of .ie domain names relating to towns and villages back in the early 2000s.

Conor Williams of the Technology sub-group of K2017 said a written proposal had been advised, outlining what was proposed on the domain, as well as stating the conditions under which the site would be run.

The meeting heard that a 'protocol' under which communities could use the domains was currently being developed by the Council, and was likely to be completed within weeks.

Conor Williams also noted that the Technology sub-group had now put live a Facebook page under the 'Kilcullen Town' label, to supplement the Twitter account under the same banner.
